Kingwood is one of the largest master-planned communities in the country, with wooded neighborhoods, strong schools, and a community identity that runs deep. It is also a place where a lot of people are carrying real weight. Dual-income schedules stretched thin. Marriages under the pressure of careers in the energy sector. Kids navigating competitive schools and social stress. The thing that keeps most people from reaching out for counseling is not that they think it is a bad idea. It is that they have not found someone they actually trust.
The Shift Counseling and Wellness, PLLC sees clients from Kingwood at our FM 1960 East office in Humble, about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Kingwood Town Center heading west on FM 1960. We are a private-pay practice, which means your care is driven by what you and your therapist decide together, not by what an insurance plan will cover. Bri Baum, one of our therapists, is a Gottman Level 2 certified clinician, which is particularly relevant for couples and marriage work.
If you are in Kingwood and looking for a therapist who will take the time to find the right counselor for you, we are here.

When you stop feeling like partners and start feeling like two people managing the same house, couples counseling gives you both a space to slow down, say what is actually happening, and decide what to build from here. No blame, no taking sides. The goal is for both of you to feel heard.
Family dynamics can get messy, and tension does not always resolve on its own. Family therapy helps everyone in the room communicate more clearly, understand each other better, and find a way forward together.
Sometimes you just need a space that is entirely yours. Individual therapy gives you room to process what you are carrying, understand your patterns, and build tools that actually hold up in real life. We work with adults and older adolescents.
Kids do not always have words for what they are feeling, and they should not need them. We work with children through child-centered play therapy, and offer teens a calm space built around their experience, not a checklist.
These guides explain the challenges and symptoms our counseling helps people work through and overcome, how each one tends to show up, and the ways therapy can help. Explore a topic to learn more.
The Shift is a private-pay, out-of-network practice. We do not bill insurance directly.
That is a deliberate choice. When a therapist does not have to answer to an insurance company, your care is shaped by what you and your therapist decide is right for you. You get the clinician who is the actual best fit, sessions that are not cut short by a plan's arbitrary limits, and the kind of consistency that gives this work room to unfold.
If you are looking for in-network therapy, we are happy to point you toward someone who takes your plan.

See all servicesA few things stand out. The Shift is a private-pay practice, which means your care is shaped by you and your therapist, not by what an insurance plan will approve. Chess Scott, the founder and a counselor himself, built the practice around careful, intentional matching, keeping caseloads deliberate so clients are not just assigned to the next available slot. Bri Baum on the team is Gottman Level 2 certified for couples work. Jordan Baca has a specific focus on LGBTQIA+ clients. The practice as a whole leans into the harder conversations, the kind most people have been putting off for a while.
