When families reach out

Common reasons teens come to counseling

You do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. Most parents come to us because something changed with their teenager, and they want to help before it gets worse.

Responsibility and freedom

One of the biggest struggles in a house with a teenager is the tug-of-war between how much freedom they want and how much responsibility they've actually shown. Therapy gives both sides language for that instead of just conflict.

Anxiety, worry, and persistent stress

School pressure, social anxiety, or a constant low-level dread that makes it hard to rest. Teens often do not have words for it, they just know something feels too heavy.

Depression and low mood

Withdrawing from friends, losing interest in things they used to love, or sleeping all day and still feeling exhausted. Depression in teens often looks like disconnection.

Self-esteem and identity questions

Figuring out who you are is hard enough without social media and peer pressure in the mix. Therapy gives teens a private space to work that out at their own pace.

Grief, trauma, and hard experiences

Loss of a relationship, a parent divorce, abuse, or any experience that changed something. Teens carry these things quietly. Therapy is a safe place to finally put them down.

Academic pressure and performance stress

Grade anxiety, fear of failure, burnout from trying to be perfect. Teens dealing with academic stress often need help separating their worth from their GPA.

Substance use and risky choices

Experimenting, vaping, drinking, or other risky behavior that has you worried. Therapy gives your teen a nonjudgmental space to talk about what is really going on underneath it.

Is this normal teenage behavior, or something more?

Every teenager pulls away sometimes, pushes back, gets moody. That's part of growing up. The difference we look for is how long it lasts, how intense it gets, and whether it's genuinely interfering with school, friendships, or how your teen is doing day to day. If you're not sure, we'd rather you reach out and be wrong than sit with the worry. We tend to err on the side of caution and encourage getting an outside perspective.

How teen counseling works

A safe space for your teen, and clarity for you

Teen therapy here is never clinical or cold. Your teen's therapist meets them where they are, uses evidence-based methods that fit adolescents, and keeps you informed without ever breaking the trust the room depends on.

  1. Start with a free consultationA short, no-pressure call where you share what you are seeing at home. We listen without judgment and help you decide if we can help.
  2. Your teen meets their therapistA 90-minute intake designed to feel like a conversation, not an evaluation. It can be teen and parent together for part of the time and just your teen for the rest, sometimes a parent steps out partway through. Your teen sets the pace. Nothing is forced.
  3. Weekly sessions, with parents in the loopMost teens come weekly. You receive regular updates on themes and progress, never session content. The space stays private so it actually works.
Prefer your teen to reach out directly?

We also offer a free consultation with just your teen or young adult. Letting them make that first call themselves is often what makes them more willing to actually go.

What changes

What becomes possible for your teen

Most parents do not come to us because their teenager is broken. They come because they want to reach them again, and they are not sure how.

A teen who knows how to handle hard things

When teenagers have a safe place to process what's happening inside, they stop carrying it alone. You start to see steadiness where there used to be outbursts or silence, and how to feel safe asking for support when they need it.

Better conversations at home

Therapy does not just change the teenager. It changes the whole dynamic. When a teen learns how to name what they feel, something in the family shifts too.

Confidence that carries into adulthood

This is not just about getting through high school. The self-awareness and emotional tools your teen builds in counseling follow them into every decade after.

More than just therapy

Bringing your teen to therapy also shows them it's okay not to have all the answers, and that asking for help is a strength.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What are the signs my teenager might need therapy?

Some signs are more visible: your teen has pulled back from friends or activities they used to love, grades have dropped, they have become unusually irritable or withdrawn, or they have said something that worried you. Other signs are quieter: they seem flat or numb, they are sleeping constantly or barely at all, or they are just harder to reach than they used to be. Not every teenager who is struggling will show obvious distress or ask for help. If your gut is telling you something has shifted and you cannot get beneath it through conversation, that is worth trusting. You do not have to wait for a crisis to reach out.

Do you work with teens for anxiety and depression?

Yes. Anxiety and depression are the most common reasons teenagers come to us, and both respond well to counseling. Teen anxiety often shows up as perfectionism, avoidance, social withdrawal, constant worry, or a sense of dread that parents describe as their kid just not seeming like themselves. Teen depression tends to look like low energy, irritability, loss of interest in things that used to matter, or pulling away from people. We work with teens on both, using approaches that are evidence-based and adapted to how teenagers actually think and process. We can talk more about our specific approach in a consultation.

What happens in a teen therapy session? What does my child talk about?

Sessions with a teen are built around what the teen brings in, not a fixed agenda. Your teenager and their therapist will talk about what is going on in their life, what they are feeling, and what they want to work on. The approach adjusts to who your teen is. Not every teenager wants to sit across a desk and process emotions out loud. Some sessions involve other activities or formats that help teens open up in ways that straight conversation does not always allow. The goal is to give your teen a space where they feel heard without pressure, so they can be honest about what is really going on.

Will you share what my teen says with me as a parent?

Teen therapy sessions are confidential. What your teenager shares with their therapist stays between them, and that is intentional: teens are more willing to be honest when they know the space is private. There are situations where confidentiality has limits regardless of age: if your teen shares something that indicates they are at serious risk of harming themselves or someone else, or if there is a report of abuse, we are required to act on that. Even in those situations, we involve your teen in how and what gets shared, to the extent they're comfortable and able. It's not something that happens to them without their knowledge. Outside of those safety situations, the content of sessions is your teen's to share on their own terms. We will always keep you informed about how the overall process is going and what we are working on in general terms, so you are not left in the dark.

How do I get my teenager to agree to go to therapy?

This is one of the most common questions parents ask us before booking. Most teenagers don't walk in excited about therapy, and pushing hard tends to backfire. What works better is being honest about what you're seeing without diagnosing or blaming, making it clear that going doesn't mean something is deeply wrong with them, and giving them some ownership in the process.

One option that helps: we also offer a free consultation with just your teen, no parent in the room. Letting them make that first call, pick the day, or ask their own questions beforehand can reduce resistance significantly. If they come in skeptical, that's fine. A lot of our best work starts with a teenager who didn't want to be here.

What ages do you work with?

We gauge fit by where your child is developmentally and what they are dealing with, not a strict age cutoff. We meet every young person where they are. A younger teen who has been through a significant experience may be ready for the kind of work we do in teen therapy. An older teen working through something that calls for a different approach will be met there instead. If you have a younger child, our child counseling track may be the better fit. When you reach out, we will have an honest conversation about what your child needs and whether we are the right people for it.

Is teen therapy covered by insurance?

We are a private-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. Teen sessions are billed at the same rate as individual sessions. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, we can provide a superbill after each session for potential reimbursement. We accept FSA and HSA payments. If you have questions about cost or what your plan might cover, bring them up in your consultation and we will walk through it with you.
