What to Expect When Getting Started
Beginning therapy is a big step, and we want the path forward to feel simple and supportive. Here’s how the process works:
Start with a free 15-minute consultation
Share what’s bringing you in, ask questions, and get a feel for whether the match feels right.
Your first full session (90 Minutes)
Your first 90-minute session is a thorough assessment where we review clinic policies, gather important background information, complete any needed screenings or assessments, and give you time to get comfortable with your therapist and the process.
Your second session (50 Minutes)
Your therapist will take a deeper look at your current concerns, help clarify what you’re hoping to work on, and outline a direction for therapy.
Your third session (50 Minutes)
You and your therapist will work together to create clear, practical goals and objectives that will guide your progress over the next 90 days. This collaborative plan helps ensure your sessions stay focused, measurable, and aligned with the changes you want to make.
Our Approach to Private Pay
The Shift Counseling & Wellness is a private-pay practice. That means we do not bill insurance directly. Many clients use HSA/FSA benefits to pay for counseling, and if you’d like to seek out-of-network reimbursement, we can provide a detailed superbill you can submit to your insurance provider.
Here’s why many clients appreciate this approach:
Quality: In mental health care, insurance reimbursement rates often fall short of supporting the level of treatment skilled clinicians provide. Because of this, many of our clients choose not to use insurance and instead pay privately — prioritizing attentive, high-quality, and results-driven care.
Confidentiality: Your records stay between you and your therapist, giving you a higher level of privacy than most insurance-based models allow.
Flexibility: Sessions are tailored to your needs. This gives your therapist the freedom to use the methods and pace that best support your therapeutic process.
Simplicity: No diagnosis is required to receive care. That means no coverage denials, no billing surprises, and no insurance labels that follow you later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
The Shift Counseling & Wellness is a private-pay practice. While we don’t bill insurance directly, many clients use HSA/FSA funds to cover sessions.
This allows counseling to stay focused on quality care—confidential, flexible, and centered around your goals, not paperwork. If you’d like to seek out-of-network reimbursement, we can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance provider.
How often should I come to counseling?
Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially in the beginning when support and momentum matter most. As you start feeling more grounded and confident, many people shift to bi-weekly or monthly appointments.
Your therapist will help you decide what pace best supports your goals — whether you’re working through something specific, navigating a transition, or wanting consistent space for growth. Sessions can also be scheduled more frequently during times when extra support feels helpful.
Do you offer discounts or on a sliding scale?
We don’t currently offer sliding-scale pricing. However, prepaid bundles provide a small savings for clients who want to plan ahead.
How long are sessions?
Most therapy sessions last 50 minutes, though some clients choose extended sessions when they want more time for deeper work.
What if I’m not sure which service is right for me?
If your path forward is unclear, we encourage you to take advantage of a free consultation. We’ll listen, answer your questions, and help match you with the right therapist and service for your needs.
