Children’s Counseling in the Lake Houston Area: Helping Kids Grow with Confidence and Resilience

When children struggle to express what they feel, it can show up as worry, anger, frustration, or withdrawal. At The Shift, we help kids find healthy ways to communicate, build coping skills, and thrive — so they feel more confident and supported in daily life.

During sessions, when developmentally appropriate, our counselors often use play therapy techniques to help children feel comfortable, understood, and safe as they share what’s on their mind.

We’re also attentive to signs of attention or regulation challenges — including early indicators of ADHD — so parents can better understand and support their child’s needs.

Make The Shift with Children's Counseling

Children express their emotions differently at every stage of development. Sometimes, kids act out what they can’t yet say — and that’s where counseling and play therapy help.

At The Shift, children’s counseling creates a warm, supportive space where kids can explore feelings through play, art, and imagination.

Our counselors meet each child at their developmental level, helping them build confidence, emotional awareness, and healthy coping skills. Parents receive regular updates and practical guidance, while sessions stay focused on the child’s unique process — creating a space that feels both safe and empowering.

Why Parents Reach Out for Children's Counseling

When children begin to struggle emotionally, behaviorally, or socially, parents notice — and that’s often when they reach out for support. They notice things like:

Emotional outbursts, frequent sadness, or withdrawal.

Coping with big life changes like divorce, loss, moving, or starting a new school/grade.

Struggles with anxiety, worry, or fear.

Difficulty making friends or navigating social situations.

Challenges with focus, attention, or following directions — sometimes early signs of ADHD or related learning differences.

Subtle shifts — like a once outgoing child becoming quiet or more self-critical.

Whatever brings you here, children’s counseling helps both you and your child feel heard, supported, and ready to move forward together.

Our Approach to Children's Therapy

Play is a child’s language — their way of sharing what words can’t yet express. At The Shift, our counselors use evidence-based play therapy techniques to help children feel safe, supported, and understood. Through play, art, and imagination, kids can explore emotions, process experiences, and grow in healthy ways.

Here’s what parents can expect…

Play-based techniques: From art projects to role-playing, we use proven play therapy methods to help children express themselves and build emotional awareness.

Developmentally tailored: Sessions match your child’s developmental level — not based on age. For children with focus or regulation challenges, we use movement-based play therapy to support attention and early ADHD-related needs.

Parent support: While sessions are focused on the child, parents receive regular updates and guidance to help reinforce progress at home.

Safe and encouraging: The goal isn’t to “fix” your child—it’s to support them in developing confidence and self-expression.

In person only: Children benefit most from being in the room, but we offer online consultations for parents seeking guidance and support.

At The Shift, children’s therapy isn’t about quick fixes — it’s about creating lasting change through understanding, play, and family connection. We help kids and parents carry these tools into everyday life, so progress continues long after the session ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages are best suited for children’s counseling?

Rather than strict age limits, we focus on developmental level. Most children up to around age 12 benefit from counseling that incorporates play therapy techniques, but we adjust our approach to each child’s developmental stage and needs.

Children’s sessions are focused on your child, but parents receive updates and guidance outside the room. This helps you understand progress and reinforce emotional growth at home — without interrupting your child’s comfort or trust in session.

Play therapy is one of the techniques our counselors use to help children express thoughts and feelings when words are hard to find. Through art, stories, and creative play, kids feel more at ease sharing what’s really going on inside.

We support children working through anxiety, emotional outbursts, behavioral struggles, social challenges, grief, or family transitions. Counseling helps kids build emotional awareness, confidence, and coping skills they’ll use for life.

We don’t offer virtual play sessions, since in-person interaction is key for connection and growth. However, parents can schedule online consultations to receive support and learn strategies for home.
